Chetham’s School of Music is the Uk’s largest specialist music school, offering an unparalleled music and academic education to young people aged 8-18 from its home in the heart of Manchester. At Chetham’s we believe that everyone should have opportunity to experience music in a relevant, dynamic way. Independently and in partnership with other organisations, we offer interactive learning projects for individuals, schools and other community groups. Our Schools and Family concerts have been developed to offer just this – fun, interactive and linked with the national curriculum, the concerts present live orchestral music in a very exciting way.

Chetham’s Outreach is very grateful for the support of The Michael Bishop Foundation, Zochonis Charitable Trust, The Hargreaves and Ball Family Trust and our many other generous supporters, without whom none of our activity would be possible.

West Northumberland Primary Schools Music Project

A collaboration between the Festival and Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester

Project led by Sarah Atter and Emma Cunliffe with Keith Dale and the Festival Band

Primary school children from Greenhead, Henshaw, Allendale, and Newbrough take part in live music making at the end of this special Festival education project led by Emma Cunliffe and Sarah Atter, two of the UK’s top musical educationalists. The Abbey performance is the culmination of a series of music workshops led by Sarah at the schools during September, based on material from the BBC’s Ten Pieces Programme.

The event begins at 10am with a rehearsal of the mighty Coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest by Handel, led by Keith Dale. This will be performed by the children and the specially formed Festival Community Choir, Festival Band and organ at 10.30am and lasts about 5-6 minutes. This great work has featured at every coronation in London’s Westminster Abbey since it was written for the coronation of King George II in 1727.

The Project’s Ten Pieces concert begins at 11am and features a twelve piece Festival Band of top orchestral musicians. The concert, entitled ‘Voyage Round the World’, will land in amazing destinations presenting exciting music as it progresses, including works by Puccini, Bernstein, Shostakovitch and Bizet.

The public is invited to drop in at any time during the performance – FREE admission, no ticket required. Do come and support our local young people.
