After their fabulous concert in 2021, the highly sought after Marian Consort return to the Abbey to explore music from the very earliest times, right up to the present day. In fact, Ancient to Modern playing out in front of us, and by magical candlelight.
In this specially-crafted programme in celebration of Hexham Abbey’s 1350th anniversary, The Marian Consort explores music related to the ancient offices of the canonical hours, the services of prayer of the Catholic church which would have been celebrated daily by
the monks at Hexham from its founding until Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536. Music from the sixteenth century, a turbulent time in the political and religious history of England, rubs shoulders with timeless chant and modern reflections on ancient
texts in this evocative sequence of British choral music which includes a work by Hexham’s own Ben Rowarth.
