The Hexham Abbey Festival Chorus, formed in 1976 and comprised of local singers, continues the tradition of performing a major choral work on the first weekend of the Festival. Petite messe solennelle, performed tonight in the original (and unique) festive scoring of two pianos and harmonium, was composed in 1863 and described by Rossini as “the last of my sins of old age”.
