The Hexham Abbey Festival Chorus, formed in 1976 and comprised of local singers, continues the tradition of performing a major choral work on the first weekend of the Festival.

The oratorio Elijah was premiered in 1846 at the Birmingham Festival. It is modelled on the Baroque masterworks of Bach and Handel, which Mendelssohn loved, but its lyricism and orchestral colour firmly root it in the early Romantic period of its time.
